Near North Crime Stoppers Officials Pleased With Program Results from 2007.

The number of tips to the Near North Crime Stoppers program was up slightly last year compared to the previous year. The crime-fighting program received 560 new tips in 2007, compared to 556 in 2006. As expected, drug seizures led the list with a value of $144,200 illicit drugs being removed from the streets. The Chair of the Near North Crime Stoppers, Judie Pigeau says, “That brings the total in illegal drugs seized since the program started in the Near North region in 1988 to a staggering $42,618,000.00.”

The 560 tips also led to the arrests of 35 individuals this past year, bringing the 19-year total to 1304. Despite the high number of calls, North Bay Police coordinator Jean Lemieux says “only 11 of the calls this past year involved rewards, with $7,140 being paid out. That’s less than half of the record amount paid out three years ago,” Lemieux adds. That’s largely due to the fact that most callers are more interested in seeing justice done rather than making the call for money. “But you also have to keep in mind that three years ago we had record high numbers (nine million dollars) in recovered drugs.”

OPP Coordinator, Constable Mike Szarka notes, “The $5,467 in other recovered property in the past 12 months brings the total since 1988 to almost three-and-one-quarter million dollars ($3,224.828.00). Although it pales beside the 42-million dollar figure in drugs seized, it is still a pretty respectable number.” Szarka adds, “with the help of Crime Stoppers, area police departments were able to clear 26 cases in 2007, which brought the total number of cleared cases, since inception of Near North Crime Stoppers, to over 400.”

2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Near North Crime Stoppers program. Events are planned to mark the special occasion throughout the year in North Bay, Almaguin, Parry Sound and West Nipissing.

The ‘Shaken not Stirred’ Gala Evening

Near North Crime Stoppers held its fourth annual celebration that pays tribute to police and emergency services personnel across the North Bay region. Guests arrived at the black tie event - held October 27th at the Clarion Resort Pinewood Park in North Bay – to be wined and dined like nowhere else.

VIPs from the RCMP, OPP, North Bay Police Service, West Nipissing Police Service, Canadian Military and the region’s Ambulance Services – resplendent in their dress uniforms - were on hand to represent the area’s invaluable emergency teams.

A wide selection of silent auction items - generously donated by area businesses, organizations and individuals - generated some frenetic bidding. The Gala’s treasure chest key draw – featuring three padlocked chests containing exciting prize packages; one a $2,500 gift certificate for jewelry – was a big hit again.

As was the sumptuous five course dinner created by the Clarion Resort’s head chef Graeme Gatenby. Everyone agreed it was a feat and feast of gastronomic genius!

And then the lights dimmed and the dance floor filled as Frontline – the Sudbury based top 40s band – kicked off their first of several rocking sets, taking revelers on a musical ride until the night’s end.

Congratulations go out to the hard working NNCS board for making the fourth year’s Gala a charm. Many thanks also go out to all those who contributed to the resounding success of this event. Plans are already underway for the 5th Annual Gala Evening slated for October 25, 2008.

NEAR NORTH CRIME STOPPERS WIN PROVINCIAL AWARD!

Near North Crime Stoppers (NNCS) has won a provincial award at its annual Ontario Association of Crime Stoppers meeting. The “special project” award was for its crime-fighting mascot Nipper and the resulting colouring book. Nipper was the canine creation of world-renowned cartoonist and Near North resident Lynn Johnston of ‘For Better or for Worse’ fame.

With Nipper secured NNCS needed a way to spread his crime prevention message, (“Help Nip Crime in the Butt”) to the youngsters of the Near North community. After much meeting and brainstorming a colouring book featuring the story of how Nipper came to be such a dogged crime fighter was developed. Once again Lynn Johnston - along with key input from educators within the North Bay area – provided her talents to come up with characters and a story line for the one-of-a-kind children’s colouring book.

Johnston, North Bay area cartoonist Dave Palangio, and members of NNCS put their creative forces together to fine tune and finalize the package. NNCS secured copyright for the valuable book and its contents. The NNCS board then received a $35,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to fund a limited printing – in both official languages - of “How Nipper Became the Crime Stopping Dog”. During 2006, 20,000 copies of the colouring book were produced and an intern was hired to develop an entertaining and educational presentation for kids based on Nipper’s story.

Throughout 2006, nearly 130 presentations were made with Nipper in attendance at schools from all four school boards across the NNCS service area. Over 11,000 primary & elementary school students received the colouring book and its crime-fighting message. Both Nipper and his colouring book were a big hit with children and teachers alike! Educators continue to use this unique teaching tool as part of lesson planning under the school curriculum. Board chair Conrad Thibeault says, “This colouring book and its message have been brought into thousands of homes, raising the awareness of the Crime Stoppers program with students’ families. The colouring books are now a prominent and popular product distributed to children and parents at NNCS public appearances,” adds Mr. Thibeault. Nipper and his story have become such a hit with kids that he’s a sought out celebrity for a photo op whenever he’s in public!
